Job Overview:
The Peace Education Officer will play a crucial role in leading and enhancing peace education efforts within the framework of IOM’s broader youth engagement strategy, ‘Engage, Connect, Empower’. This position involves supporting the delivery and adaptation of the Peace and Life Skills Development Curriculum, ensuring that it is contextually relevant and aligned with community needs. The officer will be responsible for engaging youth in civic and political life, connecting communities across dividing lines, and empowering individuals through various initiatives.
The role requires a proactive approach to community engagement, curriculum development, and collaboration with key stakeholders, including government counterparts and community representatives. The Peace Education Officer will also be tasked with conducting community-based data collection and synthesizing lessons learned to inform the curriculum and peace education approach.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct community-based data collection in collaboration with the TRU Functional Adult Literacy (FAL)/Education team, utilizing participatory methods such as listening surveys and focus group discussions in assigned project locations, particularly in Upper Nile State.
Lead the adaptation and development of the Peace and Life Skills Development Curriculum, ensuring the integration of new, context-specific modules informed by community consultations and youth priorities across target areas.
Coordinate with partners and IOM teams to synthesize relevant lessons learned, best practices, and recommendations that can inform the curriculum content and broader peace education approach.
Engage with key government counterparts, notably the Ministry of Peacebuilding and the Ministry of General Education and Instruction, to review and align the curriculum with national education frameworks and peacebuilding priorities.
Facilitate validation and endorsement sessions with consortium members and relevant stakeholders to finalize and promote shared ownership of the Peace and Life Skills Development Curriculum.
Support the harmonization and enhancement of TRU’s training and educational materials, in close collaboration with the TRU Coordinator and the FAL/Education team, ensuring coherence with IOM’s ‘Engage, Connect, Empower’ youth strategy and consolidation of existing TRU-developed tools.
Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in humanitarian or development studies, economics, social development, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional experience; or a University degree in the above fields with seven years of relevant professional experience.
Professional experience in durable solutions, research, integrated programming, or displacement-related projects, ideally with some experience in fragile or conflict-affected settings.
Demonstrated experience in conducting research and analysis on durable solutions or durable solutions-related fields.
Experience in producing action-oriented analysis with clear recommendations on displacement-related issues.
Proven experience in working with international organizations, UN agencies, or NGOs in recovery contexts.
Educational Background:
The position requires a Master’s degree in humanitarian or development studies, economics, social development, or a related field from an accredited academic institution. Alternatively, a University degree in the aforementioned fields is acceptable if accompanied by seven years of relevant professional experience. This educational background is essential to ensure that the Peace Education Officer possesses the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively contribute to the organization’s mission and objectives.
Experience:
The Peace Education Officer should have a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience if holding a Master’s degree, or seven years if holding a University degree. This experience should include professional involvement in durable solutions, research, integrated programming, or displacement-related projects, particularly in fragile or conflict-affected settings. Candidates should demonstrate a strong track record of conducting research and analysis on durable solutions, producing actionable insights, and working collaboratively with international organizations, UN agencies, or NGOs in recovery contexts.
Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position. This proficiency is essential for effective communication, collaboration, and the successful implementation of peace education initiatives within diverse communities. While English is the mandatory language, knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to the local context or communities served by IOM.
