Job Overview:
The Health Officer position at IOM South Sudan is critical for the implementation of emergency health activities in the region. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting clinical activities, including patient consultations, early diagnosis, and treatment of medical conditions under primary health care services.
The role requires rapid deployment to field locations as part of a mobile health team, ensuring timely and effective health services are delivered to affected populations. The Health Officer will also facilitate referrals for patients needing secondary health care, maintain accurate records of consultations, and assist in various health campaigns, including vaccination and community health education. This position demands a proactive approach to health service delivery, with a strong emphasis on data collection and reporting to inform health interventions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Health Officer will undertake a variety of duties including: conducting patient consultations for early diagnosis and treatment; facilitating referrals for patients with moderate to severe conditions; maintaining records of consultations and ensuring data collection for morbidity reports; assisting in pre-natal and post-natal care; conducting community health education sessions on communicable diseases and maternal health; managing medical supplies and reporting shortages; monitoring medical waste management; establishing good relationships with IDP communities; and performing other duties as assigned. The role requires a commitment to maintaining quality standards and confidentiality in all medical practices.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a diploma from an accredited school, with an additional diploma in Midwifery considered an advantage. A valid practicing certificate from a recognized institution is also required. The position demands strong report writing skills and proficiency in basic computer applications, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and possess good communication skills.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a diploma in nursing or a related field from an accredited institution. An additional qualification in Midwifery is highly desirable, as it enhances the candidate’s ability to provide comprehensive maternal and child health services. Continuous professional development and adherence to current health protocols are essential for success in this role.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least two years of professional experience in primary health care, preferably within a recognized institution in South Sudan. Experience in applying both nationally and internationally accepted health protocols and guidelines is crucial. Familiarity with the local health context and challenges will be an added advantage, as will experience in emergency health response settings.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with a working knowledge of Arabic required for effective communication in the field. Knowledge of a local language is considered an advantage, as it facilitates better interaction with the communities served and enhances the delivery of health services.
